The Capuchino Garden was planted today with cauliflower, beets, lettuce, cabbage, leeks, carrots and a single pineapple sage bush.
Ms. Degregorio's students had already weeded, fertilized and turned the soil in our planting beds the week before.
The plants were watered after planting and then a second time in the afternoon (the temperature was about 85 degrees today!)
We expect to see a harvest in the following amount of time:
cauliflower - 45 to 70 days
beets - 45 to 70 days
cabbage - 70 days
leeks - harvest when one inch in diameter
carrots - 60 to 90 days
Ms. Devine turned the compost.

Did you get training on how to set up this garden? I would love to start something similar at Mills, but have no planting/growing experience. Any ideas how I can start this up at my school?

I was trained through The Garden for the Environment in San Francisco. They offer a three month garden and compost educator training that requires you perform community service in order to get your certificate. Great incentive for starting a garden!
UC Santa Cruz also offers an in-depth training during the summer. I haven't participated, but am considering signing up.
